Soviet Championships

Book Description

Starting in 1920, and running through to the early 1990s, when the political break-up of the USSR meant the end of the competition, the prestigious Soviet Championships were truly representative events with all of the top Soviet players participating.

About Taimanov, Mark

Mark Taimanov, famous Russian Grandmaster and former World Championship Candidate, has selected and annotated all of the games in this book. There can be no one better qualified, as Taimanov himself holds the distinction (along with Geller) of participating in a record 23 Soviet Championships. Bernard Cafferty, who wrote the reports on each Championship, is a fluent Russian speaker and an eminent chess historian. As a former editor of the British Chess Magazine, he has spent decades researching Russian archival literature.
