Natalie Bovis-Nelsen (aka: The Liquid Muse)
As editor of TheLiquidMuse.com, Natalie Bovis-Nelsen keeps a close eye on drink trends and bars around the world in an effort to inform both amateurs and cocktail connoisseurs where to share a quality tipple. Whether teaching a cocktail class, designing a drink for a celebrity-studded event or blogging the latest products and hotspots, Natalie's passion for cocktail culture shines through, and has come to define her career.
Within a month of its launch in April 2006, The Liquid Muse Blog caught the attention of the Washington Post Express, and was soon also featured in Marie Claire Magazine, DC Modern Luxury, and numerous websites and blogs. Natalie mixes The Liquid Muse Signature Cocktails on nationally syndicated radio shows such as “The Tasting Room With Tom Leykis” and “Food Talk! With Mike Colameco,” as well as televised morning show appearances in Miami, Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco and Rochester (with more to come!).
Although she has worked every front-of-the-house position in restaurants and nightclubs since her first foray into hospitality in 1985, Natalie believes in continual self-education through reading, attending internationalseminars and her recent completion of the prestigious B.A.R. Certification program. Cocktails from The Liquid Muse Mixology have been featured at exclusive venues ranging from the tasting room at Domaine Carneros in Napa to the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills to billionaire bachelor Calvin Ayre's Caribbean paradise, in addition to new product launch events around the country.
In an effort to include everyone in cocktailian fun, Natalie is a pioneer in bringing high-end mixology to nonalcoholic cocktails, too. Unlike the sticky, goopey, sickly sweet mocktails of yore, The Liquid Muse Virgin Mixology® applies freshly squeezed juices, beautiful glassware, and classic mixology techniques to liquorless libations.
Her first book “Preggatinis: Mixology for the Mom-To-Be” (GPP Life, December 2008) features more than 75 of her original nonalcoholic recipes designed with the stylish modern mom in mind. The book has cocktail tips throughout, including directions to “De-Virginize for Dad,” and quotes from mixology greats.
Natalie's work with nonalcoholic ingredients landed her as the mixologist and spokesperson for Fre Alcohol-Removed Wines (a subsidiary of Sutter Home). Glow Mama, a kiwi drink targeted at pregnant women, launched in early 2007 with 3 of Natalie's customized nonalcoholic drink recipes. Lipton PureLeaf tea engaged Natalie to present its new line of products at the 2008 Celebrity Food Show. And, Tales of the Cocktail, the largest annual 5-day cocktail convention in New Orleans, tapped Natalie to create its first ever “Official Non-Alcoholic Cocktail” in 2008. Even E! Online featured Natalie's booze-free “Pop Princess on Parole” designed in honor of Lindsay Lohan's post-rehab 21st birthday.
Always striving to stay in step with developing trends and widening the sphere of cocktail enthusiasts, Natalie debuted The Liquid Muse Sustainable Sips® how-to cocktail classes in Los Angeles, in 2007.
Natalie puts her B.A. in French Literature to some use by cranking out cocktail, restaurant and travel-related articles appearing in: Every Day With Rachel Ray, National Geographic Traveler/ Personal Explorer project, The Tasting Panel, Pregnancy Magazine, Capitol File (Niche Media), and her monthly cocktail column in Northern Virginia Magazine, among others. Natalie also wrote an internationally syndicated spirits column for Where Magazine from September 2007 – October 2008.
The Liquid Muse Mixology Museletter, which goes out monthly (more or less) and features recipes, new product reviews and highlights from The Liquid Muse Blog has shown up in the inboxes of tastemakers in “green” groups, mom groups, liquor and wine companies, and media including: Wine & Spirits, Bon Appetit, Every Day With Rachel Ray, O Magazine, Daily Candy, Travel + Leisure, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire, USA Today, Kiwi Magazine, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Imbibe Magazine, The Tasting Panel, National Geographic Traveler, Outside Go!, Conde Nast, Pregnancy Magazine, Shape, The Modern Luxury Group, Niche Media Group, and more.
Beverage consultant and mixologist Natalie Bovis-Nelsen is the editor of TheLiquidMuse.com, which bridges the gap between the spirits industry and the everyday consumer.
In addition to writing about cocktails, she provides brand consultation to alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverage companies and teaches cocktail classes around the country. She has appeared on regional and national television and radio shows, and hosts video podcasts (found on her website) highlighting cocktail culture. Natalie is also the author of Preggatinis: Mixology for the Mom-to-Be, which launched to rave reviews and was included in about.com's Best Cocktail Books of 2008.
Whether you're reaching for The Bubbly Bride or Preggatinis, Natalie hopes to inspire you to incorporate quality mixology into your home entertaining. Visit www.theliquidmuse.com for more cocktailian tidbits and to join The Liquid Muse Cocktail Club.
